Advertising and Tips

This is the thread for advertising, and for other members to give suggestions and tips.
Before we start, some rules. Please read them.
Rules - Please Read
1) All links posted must be appropriate. This means no sexual content, inappropriate images, or excessive swearing.
2) You may post boards or websites.
3) Although since this board is about Harry Potter, it would be better if the site or forum you're advertising is at least slightly orientated around Harry Potter, we do allow non-Harry Potter sites and forums. Just be aware that people may be less interested in them.
4) Only advertise the same forum/site once, unless you make significant changes to it.
If any of these rules are violated, your post will be deleted.
My Tips to a Successful Site
In my opinion, there are three important things to creating a good, successful site:
Looks - first impressions are often based on how good the site looks. People are unlikely to want to spend lots of time there if it looks boring and plain. Even worse is if the colours are too bright, or it's hard to read the text.
Originality - what does your site have that others don't? It's very hard to be original, especially with something like Harry Potter, which is so popular. However, it's very important - people aren't going to go to your site if there are other sites with the same stuff.
Content - it's all great having a site that looks amazing, but people are going to get very bored, very soon if there's no content.
Also, if you're advertising a board, there's no reason for there to be no posts on any board. Also, I've seen forums with about fifty boards, which I find a little bit ridiculous (especially if about half of them haven't been posted on).
Rating
When rating forums and sites, please back up your opinions, and if possible, give suggestions for improvement.

PS: Occasionally I just said 'site', because I was too lazy to put 'forum or site' every time. A forum is just a specific type of site - like a house is a specific type of building.

Thanks for your definition of Forum there Firenze, I was getting a bit confused 
Anyway, I'm going to be the first to advertise, because then whenever someone visits this topic they'll go,

Okay, my brother has this kickass band called Redshift. If you're from or around NE Ohio you may have heard of it. They mostly play at bars and their music is more of a modern-rock thing. You might be able to download their music if you have Kazaa or any of those other music downloading programs. Their website is http://redshift-band.net/home.asp.
P.S. If you wander over to the "Pictures" section, my brother is on page 5 with the white t-shirt and black-and-white guitar. On page 7 of the pictures, he's in the black tank-top with "ASS PIRATE" written on his arm.

Ok, I suppose I'll reply to some of the adverts.
Zippy: very interesting site, though the background is a little overwhelming, and it's difficult to see what the links say on it. The design itself is good, though I'm not keen on frames, I suppose that's just a personal preference.
Britanny: Looks very nice. Great banner, and some very nice icons there. Although it's a pre-made layout, you've customised it nicely.
Jay: It's a bit dark, but the colours work relatively well with each other. A banner might look nice too. I'll make one for you, if you want.
Sushi: The gradients and new/no new images work very well, and I love the guidelines. I'd suggest you make the cell highlight a little more subtle (a slightly lighter grey, for example), but other than that it's great.
Skwurl: The main page is a little bare, but other than that I like it.

http://www.harrypotterrumors.net/ is a spiffyful site with awesome forums. There's a lot of random rumors people send in (as well as not-so-random ones), which are always fun to read, and there's also a section for fanfics and the DL (Derranged Lunatics), a club started by our late Dr. Toodles (no, she didn't die, her mom just made her leave because she was online to much).
Anyhoozles, I'm a mod over there, and I think it's a fantabulous site, so I thought I'd share.

I'm not a big fan of frames either, but it saves my adoring fans from having to click the back button every time they want to reach my site, the banner frame can be moved up to make the games bigger.
Plus I can hotlink thinks from othersites and still make them look asif they're on mine... Genius!!!

Okay, I fudged up and advertised in the general chatter (oops!). My apologies. I guess I should spend more time on the board.
I'm advertising a political website. It has absolutely nothing to do with Harry Potter, but I know for a fact that there are many many people on this board who are very passionate about their political beliefs. So.

Simple as that. It's great, but you have to be able to take a beating, cuz these people know thier stuff! It's fubn though.
