xx Official Guidelines, Abbreviations, and FAQ
« Thread started on: Jan 23rd, 2007, 7:53pm »

Welcome to the Realm! Please take the time to read the Guidelines and helpful information found here!

1.)Introduce Yourself-- Introducing yourself in the Hi, I'm New.. thread located in the Entrance Hall. Please do not create a new thread to introduce yourself, as this really clutters the board.

2.)Do not SPAM-- SPAM is defined as:
Short
Pointless
Annoying
Message.
We generally ask that a post contain three sentences, although we understand that three sentences aren't always needed to get your point across. Any post that contains less than three sentences, but still contributes to the conversation will not be considered SPAM. Never feel that you can't ask someone to clarify themselves if you don't understand what is going on. That is not SPAM.

3.)Grammar and spelling--Since this site is centered around a book, we thought it would be nice if people used proper spelling and grammar. Net speak is usually pretty hard to read, especially for the older members around here (and there are some, believe it or not ) For example, which of these is easier to read:

i thnk hp iz gr8

or

I think Harry Potter is great!

See what I mean? Now, we understand that not every person can use 100% proper grammar at all times(I'm sure I have some of my own errors here in the rules), and we won't yell at you for one or two grammatical mistakes within a post, just please try to pay attention to what your are typing. There are some abbreviations that are accepted, and I will post them in their own post on this thread so that they don't get lost in the middle of the rules.

Caps are considered yelling many places on the internet. The Realm is one of those places. Please don't yell at us, we understand you in your normal voice just fine.

4.)No personal attacks--Not everyone will get along with everyone, and that is understandable, but please, if you have an issue with someone, please send a PM to a mod so that they can help you work it out. No one wants to be called names. In the rare case that a problem cannot be solved, it's suggested that you agree to disagree, and please don't go out of your way to rile each other up.

5.)No starting a thread just to advertise-- If you do so, the post will be deleted and you will receive one warning. We work too hard on this site just to have people join just to have them advertise their own site. There is, however, a thread somewhere on the General Chatter board that has been started just for advertising sites. Kindly look for that and post your ad there. Thanks!

6.)Members can not begin RPG's--There are directions at the top of each RPG explaining how to get an RPG started when you have an idea for a new one.

7.)No mod bashing-- Try to be patient with the mods. There are only so many of us to go around, and we work hard to take care of every problem, however it may take a little time to get your problem solved. Also, if you have a problem with a specific mod, please send a PM to a global moderator or an admin, and we will help you settle your problem. Also, please be aware that we are only human and will make mistakes from time to time. Nobody's perfect.

Current Global Mods

8.)Do not PM people asking them to review your fanfic or RPG. If you do so, most people will specifically avoid your work, not because it's bad, but because they want to find stuff to read on their own. There is a board that can be used to recommend fiction, so if all else fails find a friend to rec your fic for you.

9.)Do not use huge images in your avatar/signature
Please keep your avatar around 100x100. Please keep you signatures around 400x300, smaller if you can. The larger your signature is, the longer it takes for the page to load. If a moderator feels your signature is too big you will be sent a PM asking you to resize it. To find out how to resize an image, scroll down to the FAQ, it's explained.

10.)Do not hotlink-- This is not so much our rule as it is considered to be stealing. There is also the chance that you could be hot linking from a small site that watches their bandwidth very closely because the bandwidth costs them money. If someone traces your hot linking back to the Realm and they decide to go after someone, that someone would be Gypsy and not you.

There are many sites that you can use to host pictures completely free of charge. I personally suggest www.photobucket.com

11.)Have fun-- and don't take things too seriously, after all we are here because we have our love of Harry Potter in common.

12.) Do NOT post NC-17 Material-- This is a child-friendly forum. You have two options: Either you PM one of the Flourish and Blotts mods for the password and check out the "NC-17 stories" thread, or you go over to www.restrictedsection.org if you want to post that.

13.) Most boards have, next to the general rules you've just read, their own seperate rules. Before posting on a board you see has an extra set of rules, please read them first.

Conforums Guide

Colours/Font Types: Conforums uses UBBC codes, which are quite similar to HTML codes. There is a toolbar at the top of every reply box with options. To, for example, change your font colour, you go to the drop menu that says "Colors" and choose a colour. You then delete the word "TEXT" and type between the code tags. Otherwise you get funny "TEXT"s all over your messages. For example:

Code:
[color=LimeGreen]Lalala look at me type. The word "TEXT" used to be here, but I deleted it and wrote my post instead![/color]
Also, some colours are unreadable, so make sure your post can be read. Use the Preview button.

This process applies to Bold, Italics, Underline, Glow Fonts, URLs, images, etc. Basically, anything on the toolbar.

Remember that things like quiz art and the like will need to be changed from HTML to UBBC coding before they can show up on these boards. If you need help changing them, ask a moderator and we will help you.

New Thread/New Polls: At the top right hand corner of each board there are two icons that say "New Thread" and "New Poll". Click these to start -gasp!- new threads and new polls. Remember: Polls only belong on the Poll Board. Do not post them anywhere else.

Replying to a post: At the bottom and the top of every thread there is a "reply" button. Click it, and it will take you to the box where you write stuff. Quite simple.

Quoting, Modifying, and Deleting: At the top of every post within a thread is a "quote" icon. You use this if you want to quote what someone has said in your own message. Clicking this brings you to a reply box.

At the top of your posts, you will also see a "modify" button. You use this to edit your post, rather than replying and saying "Oops..." or "I forgot this!"

Finally, you can delete your own posts. If you accidentally post something twice, or say something you regret saying, you click this and your post goes away. This cuts down on double posts.

Also, when you would like to delete a thread that you started, deleting the first post WILL NOT DO ANYTHING but delete the first post. You will leave the rest of the thread hanging there. If you need to have an entire thread deleted, ask one of the moderators of the board or a Global or Admin and we will gladly help you.

Profiles: Your profile affects many things. It controls what your avatar is (the little picture below your name), what your sig is (what appears at the end of yor messages) and what people see when they click on your name. To create or edit your profile, go to the toolbar at the very top of the screen. There should be an icon that says "Profile". Click it and fill in the appropriate information.

Post count and Stars The number of stars under your name changes when you reach a certain amount of posts. Here is the list:
Newbie: 0-49 posts. 1 star
Junior Wizard: 50-149 posts, 2 stars
Auror-in-Training: 150-274 posts, 3 stars
Order of Merlin, Third Class: 275-499 posts, 4 stars
Order of the Phoenix, Merlin First Class: 500+ posts, 5 stars
Moderators have green stars, global moderators have blue stars, administrators have gold and green stars.

Private Messages (PMs): A PM is a message that you send to another member that only they will see. Sort of like an email, only through the message board. To send one, click on the name of the person you want to PM. At the bottom of their profile is a link labeled "Send this person a private message". Click this, and write your message in the box that appears. Then hit "send".

To view your PMs, go to the top of your screen. It should say, for example: "Hey, Siofra, you have 64 messages, 2 are new!" Click this, and it will take you to your inbox.

So there you go, a nice instructional thread for y'all. We'll update it if we feel it's necessary to do so.

Welcome to the Official Forum FAQ

What is a FAQ? A FAQ is a place where Frequently Asked questions are answered. Any questions that come up over and over again from our members will be answered here! Great isn’t it! This thread will be updated as new questions arise. If you have a question about the forum, please post it on the Help Topic and it will get answered!
Onto the FAQ!

Where do I get the pretty colors?
The largest collection of color codes we have found to date can be found here. Make sure your code looks something like this FFFAFA. It can have letters and numbers in it depending on the color you pick.

Why are some colors banned and what colors are they?
Some colors have been banned because they are difficult to read on the Realms dark background. The banned colors are:
Black
Maroon
Brown
Navy blue
Dark grey
Dark green
If a moderator PM’s you asking you to change your color it is because it is difficult to read, not because we dislike you.

How do I make my font glow?
To get the glow effects in a post simply click reply. Once the reply form as popped up look at the top bar of commands, you will see a green G. Click on that.
You should get something that looks like this Code:
 [glow=red,2,300]TEXT [/glow]
Replace red with one of the different color choices or one of the millions of HEX color codes out there. Next delete Text. Then type in your message. **Moderators reserve the right to ask you to remove your glow color if it burns our eyes. Some of those glow fonts melt retinas from 1,000 yards. Please do not be offended if we ask you to change it.**

How do I put a picture in my signature?
To put a picture in your signature you first need the web address of your image. Right click the image on the web, a box will appear. Click “image properties” and copy the address. In you signature type Code:
[IMG] web address goes here [/IMG]
Walah! An image! Just remember NEVER hotlink an image. Hot linking means that your image comes form someone else’s website. You are using their bandwidth and costing them money when you hotlink their image. There are a ton of free image hosting services out there. Try one of these:
http://friendpages.com
www.inkfrog.com
www.mypicgallery.com
www.weblogimages.com
www.1asphost.com/
http://ripway.com
www.angelfire.com
www.photobucket.com
www.freepichosting.com/
www.picturetrail.com/
www.villagephotos.com/
www.imageshack.us/
To put an image in your post just do the same thing

How big can my avatar/signature be?
Please keep your avatar around 100x100. Please keep you signatures around 400x300, smaller if you can. The larger your signature is, the longer it takes for the page to load. If a moderator feels your signature is too big you will be sent a PM asking you to resize it.

How do I resize my image?
Type this: Code:
 [img width=## height=##]URL[/img]
where the ## are type in what size you want the image to be.

How do I link to another website or post without having the big ol’ web address showing?
You do this: Code:
[url= website address goes here]word you want to use for your link[/url]

What do those little pictures next to the threads mean?
The little icons next to the topics mean several things
Folder with flames = this topic has 15-24 replies

Orange/red folder with flames = this topic has more than 25 replies

Thumb tack on the folder = that folder is "stickied" to remain near the top of the page

Lock on a folder = a moderator has locked that topic because it violates forum rules or has been hit by a bug

Arrow on a folder = that topic has been moved to another part of the forum

This person is breaking tons of rules! Can I warn them?
Please no. If you find a member breaking the rules, please send a moderator a PM. We’ll get right on it.

Can I make a poll on any board?
No. All Polls should be made on the Poll Board. Polls not made on the Poll board will be moved there.
